SURGERY OF THE HIP
Dr Sommerville provides expert surgical care to adolescents and adults diagnosed with musculoskeletal tumours and tumour-related conditions, both benign and malignant. These include primary & metastatic bone tumours, soft tissue sarcoma, and pathological fractures.
Dr Sommerville is the founding member of the Wesley Sarcoma MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) and works closely with other surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to provide a multidisciplinary, coordinated treatment approach.
TYPES OF TUMOURS
Having any form of tumour can be very distressing. It is important to remember that not all soft tissue and bone tumours are malignant (cancerous). Some may be benign, but can be very aggressive, others may be malignant, but be very indolent and slow growing.
BENIGN
Common benign tumours include
Soft tissue - Lipoma, Schwannoma
Bone - enchondroma, Osteochondroma, giant cell tumours
MALIGNANT
Primary & Malignant Soft tissue and bone tumours, including
sarcoma - Ewings, osteosarcoma, liposarcoma, chondrosarcoma
